Naming dogs can be an art. It’s amazing how sometimes we humans have names already decided before we ever see the dog we’ll include in our family.

Sometimes those names are linked to characters from movies, shows, games, books we’ve loved. Maybe we name our dog something that we weren’t bold enough to name our children. You know who you are.

Much like names for people there are trends that arise regarding dog names. In Missouri these popular dog names can sometimes bleed over to communities on the other side of the border to neighboring states. It happens.

Over the last few decades we have tended to name our dogs using more traditional people names instead of “sporting” names which were far more normal in the 20th century.

The first time I remember a pet given a human name was a college friend whose pet was named “Greg”. I thought it was hilarious…I mean, it’s still kinda funny. Then there was the time I couldn’t bring myself to date someone because they had the same name as one of our family dogs, “Mitzi”. Worlds were colliding.
