When I first heard about this I thought it was pretty weird. Then I watched the video. It's still weird, but it's also sort of impressive. Two artists with backgrounds in carpentry have built two fully-functioning apartments: one on the outside of a giant hamster wheel, and one on the inside.

The wheel is 25 feet tall. Each "room" includes a bedroom, sink, office and even a bathroom. Performance artists Alex Schweder and Ward Shelley are actually living in the apartment for 10 days in a Brooklyn art gallery. It reminds me a lot of the space stations in '2001: A Space Odyssey.' Their exhibit is appropriately titled 'In Orbit.'

We have some amazing artists in our area. Some are local, many have moved to the area to live and work along the 50 Miles of Art between Hannibal and Clarksville. Some of our local artists do work that is truly incredible. Others do work that is truly weird. Even so, I don't know that I've ever seen anything quite as odd as the human hamster wheel. At least not between Hannibal and Clarksville.

The next 50 Miles of Art studio tours weekend is coming up between March 29 - 30. Studio tours take place twice each year, the last weekend in March and the first weekend in November. During these weekends, local artists and artisans share their studios, galleries, art and unique shops with the public.

You probably won't see an enormous hamster wheel if you take the tour, but you might find a piece of art that would actually fit in your home... without being your home.
