Quincy Man Mentioned on Cardinal TV Broadcast
So there I was watching the St. Louis Cardinal baseball game Tuesday night as the Cards were hosting the Washington Nationals when they showed on camera a live shot of my friend Rick Hummel, a Baseball Hall of Fame sportswriter in the top of the 4th inning. The two TV broadcasters, Dan McLaughlin and Ricky Horton were talking about "The Commish", which is Hummel's nickname.
Hummel, a graduate of Quincy Senior High School, asked McLaughlin if he would say hello on the television airwaves to a friend of his by the name of Sam Russell, Jr. of Quincy, Illinois. Apparently Sam, a live-long Cardinal fan, has a birthday coming up in a few weeks and he will be turning 100 years old in October. So McLaughlin and Horton obliged.
What a cool gesture by "The Commish" to ask and to McLaughlin and Horton to do. I wrote this because I wanted Sam Russell, a person I do not know, to be aware that this happened last night.
So if you know 99 year old Sam Russell make sure you tell him what they did during the St. Louis Cardinal broadcast on TV last night. Happy birthday in advance Mr. Russell.
