The Quincy City Council Monday night gave preliminary approval to an ordinance giving police the power to issue citations to anyone not following Governor Pritzker’s stay at home order.

In a letter to the council, Police Chief Rob Copley asked the council to make it a city violation for non-compliance with the governor’s order, with fines up to $500.

Mayor Kyle Moore said he felt the vast majority of Quincy residents are abiding by the order, but that there needed to be consequences for those who refuse to abide by the statewide Executive Order.

The council unanimously approved the first reading of the ordinance. A final vote will come next week.
