Youth Season Success: Missouri Kid Drops Massive Indiana Buck
Blake Garrett took his 8-year old son Hudson to West Central Indiana after a friend invited them to hunt on his land there. Neither could’ve imagined the size of what was headed their way.
Always Be Prepared. You Will be Tested
Youth deer season opened September 28 in Indiana, and the grade schooler from Missouri was prepared. Their positioning in a blind was on the edge of a field and food plot, and trail cam footage had shown activity in that area. Putting yourself in a position to make the most of a situation was precisely what these two had done. As always though, there are other elements that come into play. Timing, patience and luck all play a role in hunting. They all did that day too.

The father-son duo from Marshall, Missouri waited in the blind for a while when an impressive buck strolled confidently into the opening and promptly bedded down in the tall grass. Massive rack visible, but nothing to aim at. Patience employed. The buck, after a thirty-minute rest got back up only to adjust his position and lay back down. Patience. About an hour later the buck rose and Hudson knew this was it.
Timing, Patience and Luck All Play a Role When Hunting
The travel, the walking, the waiting, all came to this moment. Calmly squeezing the trigger, Hudson placed his shot tidily behind the buck’s shoulder, and it went down on the edge of the field some thirty yards away. Hudson has brought down bucks before, but not of this stature. 14 points. 184 inch non-typical isn’t something you typically daydream about. Each hunt is a story, this one had an amazing ending, regardless of age.
