US Postal Service Change Could Now Affect Illinois Tax Returns
State officials are sending out a warning to Illinois residents about USPS postmark changes this year that could delay your tax return.
New USPS Postmark Policy Raises Filing Concerns
According to a press release from the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR), there's been a key change by the United States Postal Service (USPS) that could affect whether your tax returns are considered on time.

Under the updated 2026 policy, USPS postmarks will reflect the date mail is processed through automated systems, not necessarily the day it was dropped off at a local post office.
For time-sensitive documents like your tax returns, that difference could be critical.
Earlier Filing Urged Ahead of April Deadline
With the April 15 tax deadline approaching, IDOR Director David Harris is urging residents to mail documents earlier than usual, because waiting until the last minute could result in a postmark date that falls after the deadline, potentially triggering penalties.
Taxpayers still have the option to request a manual postmark at USPS retail counters. These hand-applied markings will reflect the actual date the postal service takes possession of the mail and are available at no cost.
Electronic Filing Recommended as Safest Option
State officials emphasize that electronic filing remains the most reliable method to ensure on-time submission. Through MyTax Illinois, residents can file returns and make payments without worrying about mailing delays or postmark discrepancies.

For those who prefer not to file electronically, IDOR offices offer an alternative: in-person drop-offs with an official date stamp to verify timely submission.
Planning Ahead Can Prevent Penalties
Tax officials stress to Illinois residents that preparation is key. Whether you choose to mail early, request a manual postmark, or file electronically, taxpayers are being encouraged to be proactive.
Make sure to take steps to avoid any unnecessary stress and late fees tied to postal processing changes.
