What Do Missouri Squirrels Know About This Winter That We Don’t?
By any measure, the cold weather months in Missouri and Illinois have been very mild so far. Technically, it won't be winter for a few more days, but there's something about squirrel activity in Missouri that makes me wonder what they know about our upcoming winter that we don't.
The latest prediction for winter in Missouri from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center is a warmer than normal winter.
However, something concerns me about what I'm seeing the squirrels in our Missouri neighborhood doing. They're building their nests higher up in the trees than normal.
The reason I noticed this is something the Old Farmer's Almanac says about squirrels building nests high up in trees as a sign that we're in for a colder and snowier winter.
There are 3 possibilities here depending on how much faith you put in old farmer's tales:
1. The squirrels in my neighborhood are dumb and have no clue what's going to happen this winter.
2. The squirrels are building their nests higher in trees because they know a wolf pack will be traveling through my part of Missouri soon.
3. The squirrels are right and we're gonna get hammered by a bad winter eventually.
My guess is that there is no wolf pack coming to our part of Missouri, but I understand that our squirrels may not be the smartest either. You have to think that sooner or later our part of Missouri will get a big snow and the squirrels are ready. Perhaps we should all be prepared too.
