The Food and Drug Administration has just issued a bulletin about a huge recall of shrimp that impacts the following Illinois stores:

  • Baker’s
  • Gerbes
  • Jay C
  • Kroger
  • Mariano’s
  • Metro Market
  • Pay Less Supermarkets
  • Pick ‘n Save

The shrimp brand you need to look for is Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp. The shrimp was sold between July 24, 2025 and August 11, 2025. This shrimp was prepared in areas believed to be contaminated with contaminated with cesium-137 which is a man-made radioisotope of cesium.

Here are the UPC codes to check for:

  • UPC 011110626196, Lot code 10662 5139, Best Before 11/19/2027
  • UPC 011110626196, Lot code 10662 5140, Best Before 11/20/2027

What can happen if you consume shrimp contaminated with cesium-137?

The FDA says it can damage your DNA resulting in a higher risk of cancer. If you find you have this shrimp, you should definitely not consume it. It should be disposed of or returned to the store where you bought it for a full refund. This recall appears to be related to the shrimp recall that Walmart issued a few days ago for the same reason.
