I was born and raised in Missouri and my family descended from a crazy mix of Germans, Scots and a few borderline Irish immigrants. If you are also from the Show Me State, you likely can say the same or something similar.

I decided to find out officially which of my family's home countries makes up the highest ancestry percentages in the state. For that data, I turned to the latest survey of the US Census and the results are interesting. Here's what they shared with me in easy to understand chart form.

The Frankenbach part of my family are likely pleased with the results. The Scottish Holliday clan would likely object (only 1.7%). The fact that German (20.9%) is the most common Missouri ancestry is not surprising, but considering The Hill in St. Louis, I'm shocked there aren't more Italians (3.2%).

The small population of Irish descent is also not what I expected. Considering how fiery the Irish members of my family are, I don't want to be the one to tell them this.

Also, what's up with the transplants that apparently fled Norway for Missouri? Did you think we had fjords here? Asking for a friend. Welcome to our non-glacier land, by the way.
