A Sudden Mid-December Heat Surge Could Hit Missouri

Are you already tired of snow and cold weather? What if I told you there's a chance (a key word) that Missouri will see one final warmup before winter completely takes over? There is one major computer model that does show a mid-December heat surge is possible for Missouri.

I cannot tell you how much trepidation I feel sharing this. If I'm wrong (a definite possibility), I will get torched by a disappointed audience, but that's happened before and it's fine. That's why I will show you what the GFS computer model for temperatures is showing for mid-December in Missouri. Specifically, this is what December 10, 2025 looks like according to the GFS. Those red and orange numbers over Missouri show highs could reach up to the 60's!

I don't want to burst my own bubble, but not all weather computer models agree with the GFS about the temperatures that are possible in mid-December. The European model shows that much of Missouri will be in the upper 30's on December 10, 2025.

What does the National Weather Service have to say about this possible December warmup?

The closest I can get to a National Weather Service comment on this is the NOAA Climate Prediction Center temperature outlook for the next 8 to 14 days. Spoiler Alert: it's trending toward a better chance at below-normal temperatures which is hardly an endorsement of my Missouri December warmup.

Here's my final takeaway on this. As much as I'd love to believe that Missouri will see one final surge of warmer temperatures, I fear that the GFS cannot be trusted on this. If other models were in agreement, I'd feel better about this possibility. Color me hopeful, but not optimistic that we'll get a brief reprieve from the cold and snow pattern. If nothing else, we can at least look forward to next March.
