When I think of valuable coins, I think of those held by collectors that end up going to auction. In this case, that's not accurate. You might want to check your Missouri pennies as one was found in circulation that later sold for 18,000 bucks.

The story of this legendary 1982 penny was just shared by The Coin Guy on TikTok. He explained that several things happened with how pennies were minted in 1982 that made certain ones very valuable. He said that the key to look for is the size of the date on those pennies.

In 1982, he explains that the mint started that year creating pennies with 95% copper, but changed to 95% zinc fairly early in that cycle. The copper pennies are the rare ones.

How do you tell if you have one of these valuable pennies?

Look at the date. The one on the left is smaller (and rarer) while the one on the right is larger. You also need one with the "D" meaning it was minted in Denver.

The Coin Guy does a fine job explaining the differences in these pennies that can be the difference between having one worth a cent and a rare one that could get you thousands.
