This is one of those stories that doesn't feel accurate even though it really is. You can't argue with numbers that prove that interstate shootings are way down in Illinois for the third straight year.

I was surprised by this press release by the Public Information Office of the Illinois State Police for several reasons. First, it follows recent reports of shootings on Illinois interstates which is ironic as this shows statistics proving that overall violence on Illinois roadways is way down.

  • 310 shootings in 2021
  • 189 shootings in 2022
  • 129 shootings in 2023
  • 89 shootings in 2024
  • 31% decrease from 2023 to 2024
  • 53% decrease from 2022 to 2024
  • 71% decrease from 2021 to 2024

Why and how are interstate shootings down in Illinois?

The Illinois State Police say the automated license plate reader technology has been a "game-changer". It helps them track vehicles without a high-speed pursuit which reduces potential injuries and it also helps them better track down suspects.

My perception is that there have been several recent interstate shootings in Illinois, but the most recent I can find happened in November which is why I never trust perception compared to facts.

Even one shooting in Illinois is one too many, however it's encouraging to see a real trajectory of improvement. A downward trend over a 4-year period is a positive thing. Let's hope that continues.
