Strange Streak Lit Up Illinois Skies, But It Wasn’t a UFO

When is a UFO not a UFO? Answer - when you know what it is. There were many in Illinois that reported seeing a strange streak across the sky a few nights ago, but it wasn't a UFO and it wasn't a meteor either.

I saw multiple reports to the National UFO Reporting Center about a strange streak that was spotted over many parts of Illinois the night of August 15, 2026 at around 10pm local time. There was an eyewitness in Centralia, Illinois and another in Mahomet. One of the people said they saw "Bright steady moving light within a cloud" and the other "Bright white, silent object appeared above our lake in the backyard. floated silently from SW to NE and dropped a light under it."

If not a UFO or meteor, what did these Illinoisans see?

Space Flight Now confirms that both of these Illinois UFO reports were actually SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets. A press release from Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, Chief Executive Officer, Globalstar said “This launch represents another important step in sustaining and strengthening the infrastructure our customers rely on every day,”

There you have at least a couple of Illinois UFO reports solved. There are still plenty that aren't, but knowing when rocket launches from SpaceX happens helps to tell truth from fiction.
