VIDEO: Comet Fragment Booms Over Illinois, ‘Sounded Like Thunder’
In one of the most widely-visible sky events of 2023, a new video shows a space rock that exploded in the sky causing a boom that caused it to be seen and heard in 9 states including Illinois.
The American Meteor Society shared this amazing event that happened Wednesday night, August 2, 2023. The map which documents all the reported sightings show the 9 states that witnessed this meteor. Note that several reports came from Illinois.
One of the best videos that captured the comet fragment explosion was taken in West Virginia by Bill Stewart. Make sure your sound is turned up for this one.

On his video share, Bill Stewart said that the comet fragment rivaled the brightness of the moon as it exploded which is rare. He just dropped a new video on his YouTube channel showing the process that he went through to capture the meteor.
As of this writing, there are 74 reports on the American Meteor Society website which makes it one of the most visible sky events of 2023 so far.
