Open Your Wallet – Illinois Gas & Grocery Tax Relief Ends in July
I had completely forgotten about this, but starting in July everyone that shops in Illinois will get reminded of the tax relief that we've been enjoying for the past year when it comes to gas and groceries because it's about to end.
I guess this is one of those things I had just taken for granted, but Supermarket News tapped me on the shoulder and reminded me that the inflation relief that Illinois had put into place last year was about to expire.
As of July 1, the 1% tax on groceries in Illinois returns. That sounds miniscule, but sure does add up over the course of a year. Bummer.
The gas "relief" truly wasn't much of one. Not getting into the politics of this, but the "relief" was a suspension of the automatic gas tax hike for only 6 months. Supermarket News says the total increase will amount to 6.2 cents per gallon.
The website Illinois Policy notes that the Land of Lincoln is one of only 13 states that taxes groceries. To be fair, Missouri's tax is higher at 1.23% on food. Misery loves company I suppose.
Best to go ahead and mentally prepare now for slightly higher costs when you check out at the grocery store and fill up at the pump. It's gonna be a long summer.
