Blake Shelton has more than 20 years of radio hits to his name, so it's safe to say fans only get to hear a fraction of them when they see him in concert. At a recent stop on his Back to the Honky Tonk tour, however, Shelton brought back a memorable single from his 2003 album, The Dreamer.

In a video Shelton shared to social media, he revisits the rambunctious adventures of John Roy and Romeo in "Playboys of the Southwestern World." He prefaced the performance by saying, "It's a song about best friends," and he then launched into the song accompanied only by his acoustic guitar.

Neal Coty and Randy VanWarmer co-wrote the song, and Shelton released it as the third single from his sophomore album. "Playboys of the Southwestern World" tells the story of two rowdy young men with a dream of heading down to Mexico and living the high life. Their plan unravels as soon as they step on Mexican soil, however, and they end up "temporary cell mates."

The song is a humorous odyssey about the kind of blind optimism that often plagues young people, and it includes a musical shoutout to Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl."

While it is an undeniable Shelton classic, the song hasn't been replayed as often as other tunes from that time period, including "Austin" and "Ol' Red." Plenty of fans seemed to recognize it, though, and they sang along with Shelton as he told the story.

In the video caption, Shelton hints at performing more throwback songs throughout the tour.

"Never know when we might break out some of the old stuff on the #BackToTheHonkyTonkTour.. who remembers this one?!" he writes.

Shelton's Back to the Honky Tonk tour kicked off Feb. 16 in Lincoln, Neb., and it will conclude on March 25 in Buffalo, N.Y. Carly Pearce and Jackson Dean are joining him as openers.
