WalletHub is always sending out results of various surveys they've conducted, which rank states and cities in all sorts of categories from "best places for families" to "best places to start a business." They have also released their list of "safest states to live in" for 2014. Illinois and Iowa both made the top 10, but Missouri came in near the bottom.

According to WalletHub's 2014 Safest States To Live In study, a number of factors were taken into account to create the rankings, not just violence and crime, "The term encompasses various categories, among them workplace safety, natural disasters, home and community stability, traffic safety and, of course, financial security."

Of the fifty states and the District of Columbia, Iowa ranked 7th on the list, and Illinois was right behind with an 8th place finish. Missouri was very near the bottom, coming in at 46th place. Of all the criteria looked at for the WalletHub list, Missouri scored poorly in the categories of "highest bullying incident rate" and "highest estimated property loss from disasters." It's probably a safe bet that flooding and tornadoes account for a significant portion of the "property loss from disasters" number.
