FEMA Holding New Madrid Earthquake Drill for Midwest in October
What would really happen if the New Madrid fault unleashed a massive quake? Hopefully, we'll never know. FEMA wants us to be prepared anyway as they have slated an earthquake drill for October.
FEMA calls it The Great Central US Shakeout. The concept is earthquake preparedness in the event of a major earthquake in our region. It's a "Stop, Drop and Cover" drill that will take place on Thursday, October 21 at 10:21 am. The concept is simple. In the event that you are caught in the middle of a major earthquake, you stop what you're doing, drop to the floor and cover your head to protect yourself from falling objects. Getting under a stable object is even better.
According to The Great American Shakeout website, over 1.6 million people in our region have registered to take part in this drill including schools, businesses and individuals.
There is enough belief in the government that a major earthquake could happen on the New Madrid fault that simulations have been conducted showing what a major 7.7 shaker would do to our part of America. If that happened, major damage to buildings in our area would be unlikely. However, bridges would be a concern and would likely be shut down for a period of time.
It happened before in 1811 and 1812 and it will happen again someday. The only question is whether we will see it in our lifetime, but preparation is always a good idea. Check out The Great Central US Shakeout website if you'd like to register and/or get more information.
