When recently asked about her Miranda Lambert-endorsed shot at bringing home the Entertainer of the Year prize at the upcoming 2019 CMA Awards, Carrie Underwood didn't sugarcoat her ambitions while explaining why a win would reflect more than her own hard work.

"I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want it or it’s an honor to be nominated," Underwood tells Pollstar. "I’m competitive and committed to what we do.

"But, you know, that award is about so much more than me," she adds. "It’s about my team, all the people who work so hard with me -- from the label to the road people, the musicians, the songwriters, my management, even the fans because it’s their award, too. I see the fans coming to multiple shows, calling the radio stations, trying to find the music.

"I could say, 'I’m just doing this for the fans,' because there’s a lot of truth in that. And I’d rather be the person who doesn’t win, but should," Underwood continues. "But I look at the things that go into it: performances, album, tour, vocals, the songs. I want to be the person who truly excels at all those things."

Underwood is the first woman to be nominated for CMA Entertainer of the Year since 2016, and, should she win, she'll be the first female artist to win the honor since Taylor Swift in 2011 and only the eighth woman or woman-fronted act to win the trophy in CMA Awards history. It would also be her first CMA Entertainer of the Year win

Underwood will be co-hosting the 2019 CMA Awards, for the 12th consecutive year, with special guest co-hosts Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire. The Country Music Association is using this year's edition of the annual event to honor the genre's women in addition to presenting the usual CMA Awards trophies.

"They don’t even need last names!," Underwood says of her co-hosts. "Dolly and Reba are so recognized, they’ve reached that plateau where that’s all they need! So it kinda feels like one of those, 'Look Ma! I made it' moments. I mean, growing up in Oklahoma, I never thought I’d go to the CMA Awards, let alone be nominated, or perform, or host."

The 2019 CMA Awards are set for Nov. 13. The show will air live from Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on ABC beginning at 8PM ET.
