Hot Weather Hinders Recovery. Red Cross Has Some Tips!
As the recovery from last Monday's storm continues, many will be working in extreme heat this weekend to clean up debris. Not only will the hot weather slow down the recovery process but it is also dangerous.
The dangerously hot weather and the potential for severe weather is predicted over the next several days. The American Red Cross offers the following preparedness tips to keep you safe as the temperatures rise and severe weather threatens.
Amber Wood, the Executive Director of the American Red Cross Serving the Quad Cities and West Central Illinois states that “Excessive heat can lead to sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.” The Red Cross has some simple steps to help beat the heat.
1-Never leave children or pets alone in vehicles. The temperature inside can reach dangerous levels within a few minutes.
2-Slow down, take frequent breaks and drink more water than usual – even if you’re not thirsty.
3-Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
4-If working outdoors, take frequent breaks and use the buddy system.
5-Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone, or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.
6-If possible, bring animals inside. If not, frequently check to ensure they are comfortable and have water and a shady place to rest.
