Quincy Community Theatre has announced a nation-wide search for the coveted role of Jean Valjean in its ambitious summer production of the blockbuster musical 'Les Misérables' (July 17-27). This open casting call, which is already accepting applications, will be conducted online through March 14.

The expanded search for the role of Jean Valjean comes as part of QCT’s Guest Artist Program—bringing professional actors, directors, and writers to the Tri-States for talkbacks, master classes, and residencies. Most recently featuring talkbacks by Wanda’s World writers Beth Falcone and Eric H. Weinberger and an unforgettable performance by actor Scott McGowan in The Fantasticks (2011), this invaluable program provides community members the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse array of theatre professionals. Thus, this national search aims to find an experienced actor (Actors’ Equity union member or non-unionized) with a wide range and dynamic control who can not only tackle this vocally demanding part, but act as a mentor to his fellow cast members and help enrich the community through one to two master classes.

Potential actors must be able to play a man between the ages of 40-60, possessing a strong physical presence and the ability to lift and carry another grown man. Additionally, prospective actors must be able to comfortably sing from a low G3 to a high B5. Local actors are able to submit audition materials; however, local performers will not be compensated.

Actors aspiring to act in this powerful role are asked to submit a video audition performing “Bring Him Home” and “Valjean’s Soliloquy.” Videos must be date-stamped and should be filmed to show a ¾ body shot. Additionally, QCT requests that all actors submit a headshot, résumé, and list of references from other theatre companies.

'Les Misérables' is under the direction of guest director and QCT’s Head of Education Brandon Thomsen, with vocal direction by Jillian Wagner Miller, orchestration by Larry Finley, scenic and lighting design by Technical Director Paul Denckla, and costumes by resident designer Anna Grywalski. Angela Ketteman is serving as the Stage Manager.

All entries must be received by Friday, March 14. Submissions may be emailed to studenttheatre@1qct.org; uploaded on YouTube (with the direct link emailed with the rest of the audition packet); or mailed to QCT. Auditions for all other roles will be held May 19-20. For more information, call the QCT Box Office at (217) 222-3209 or visit 1qct.org.
