Interesting Facts about Helmet Safety

Each year, more than 500,000 people in the US are treated in emergency departments, and more than 700 people die as a result or bicycle-related injuries. Children are a particularly high risk for bicycle-related injuries. In 2001, children 15 years and younger accounted for 59% of all bicycle-related injuries seen in US Emergency Departments.

Non-helmeted riders are 14 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than helmeted riders.

Wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 85%.

Tips for getting your child to wear a helmet

  • Have your children wear helmets as soon as they start to ride tricycles or act as a passenger on the back of an adult’s bike. If they learn to wear helmets when they ride early, it becomes a habit for life.
  • Allow your child to participate in choosing their helmets.
  • Wear a helmet yourself. Children learn best by observing you. Whenever you ride your bike, put on your helmet.
  • Don’t let children ride their bikes unless they wear their helmets.
  • Encourage your children’s friends to wear helmets.HC logo- pantone
