When you think of world landmarks, what comes to mind? The Tower of London, maybe, or Easter Island, but did you know that one of the world's oldest landmarks that you can still visit is located in Illinois?

I have never seen the Cahokia Mounds, but from what I can see, you can still visit one of the most beautiful places in Illinois and the world.

According to Love Exploring, the Cahokia Mounds in Illinois are on the list of 40 oldest landmarks in the world that you can visit. It may not be as glamorous as the Tower of London or Times Square, but the mounds have so much history.

the Mississippian culture during the 11th and 12th centuries, the settlement contains Monks Mound – the largest prehistoric earthwork in the Americas.

The historic site is open to visitors at no charge for a visit or parking. Located in Collinsville, Illinois, the historical site is off Interstates 55-70 and 255, and Illinois 111, on Collinsville Road.

History of Cahokia Mounds

The site is the remains of a once "sophisticated prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico." The mounds have been said to date back to 1050–1350 CE and directly across from the Mississippi River.

The site is on the National Historic Landmark list and a designated site for state protection.
