Mail will not be delivered Thursday according to the United States Post Office.

Why?

The USPS will participate in the national day of observance for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away Dec. 29 at the age of 100. For one day, the USPS will suspend regular mail delivery, and post office activity will be closed on Jan. 9.

USPS facilities — including headquarters in Washington, DC, and area and district administrative offices — are included in the national day of observance and will be closed, except as needed for limited package delivery service.

Everything will resume as normal on Friday. President Biden declared a national day of mourning which also affected all federal offices, the New York Exchange, the Nasdaq, and the Supreme Court building. All flags have been ordered to fly at half-mast for 30 days.

If your parents or grandparents were lucky enough to see President Jimmy Carter in person when he visited Hannibal in 1979 I'm sure has stories of the President's visit. He will be remembered for, not only, being a President of the United States, but more for his work after the presidency with Habitat for Humanity.

Currently, former President Jimmy Carter lies in state at the US Capital which is open to the public from 6 pm until midnight. The funeral will take place at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday.

The last time a national day of mourning took place was when former President George H. Bush died in 2018.
