I first saw this news shared by KMOV in St. Louis. MLB.com and the St. Louis Cardinals on Twitter have also confirmed this sad news. Tim McCarver was the catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1959 from 1969. His presence as a leader on the team was key to the team reaching and often winning the World Series in the 1960's.

St. Louis Cardinals shared this quote in a press release upon learning of Tim's passing:

“We were saddened to learn today of the passing of Tim McCarver,” said Cardinals’ Principal Owner & Chief Executive Officer Bill DeWitt, Jr. “Tim was a very popular player with the Cardinals and a key member of our World Series Championship teams in 1964 and 1967. He remained a fixture in the game following his playing career, earning Hall of Fame recognition as a national broadcaster, and in later years as a Cardinals television analyst and a member of the Cardinals Hall of Fame. On behalf of the entire Cardinals organization, I would like to express our deepest condolences to the McCarver family."

Tim McCarver was elected into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame a few years ago.

Tim collected over 1,500 hits in his career and had a lifetime batting average of .271 which is incredible for a catcher especially.

More details will be added as new information about Tim McCarver's passing is released.
