Mini-Swarm of Ongoing Missouri Quakes Now Along New Madrid Fault
I'm not sharing this to alarm anyone, but if you're interested in activity along the New Madrid Fault in southern Missouri, you should know there is a mini-swarm in progress as we speak with 3 quakes just in the past couple of hours.
To emphasize, this is not a five-alarm emergency. I share this because it's been an active day along the New Madrid Fault. None of the quakes have been anything other than minor, but they are happening somewhat rapidly. Here are the 3 quakes that have occurred in Missouri late Wednesday morning and are continuing into Wednesday afternoon.
All rather tiny quakes, but this is the first time this year I can recall a rapid-fire series of quakes this close together. It will be interesting to see if this is all there is or if this swarm continues further into the day.
You might recall back in June we saw a couple of New Madrid quakes in one day and yes, this does happen every now and then. This series of Missouri quakes is a bit more interesting as it closely follows a mini-swarm that happened over several days last week.
Is this swarm a forerunner to something bigger? Doubt it, but you never know. If nothing else it's your chance to watch earthquakes as they happen in southern Missouri.
