Have you ever seen something that is stated as a fact that just doesn't sound right? That was my reflex when I saw a new "safest city" named in Missouri and it was a suburb of St. Louis.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...St. Louis gets a bad rap for how unsafe it is. Yes, the murder rate in some parts of the big city are atrocious, but I've never felt in danger when my family travels to the Gateway City. That being said, I was surprised to see one of its suburbs just get named the safest place in Missouri.

This new ranking comes from Safewise. It's their 2023 list of the safest cities in Missouri. According to their methodology, Cottleville is the safest place in Missouri. Really? If you dig deeper, you'll see this quaint place in St. Charles County might just deserve the title.

How did Safewise decide Cottleville is the safest city in Missouri?

Their methodology is this according to their website:

We use FBI crime statistics data to rank cities in each state and across the country. To add extra insight and depth to that assessment, we include demographic information and the results of our proprietary State of Safety research study.

Fair enough. According to the FBI statistics, Cottleville has very little violent crime and property crime that's below the national average. Not many St. Louis places can make that claim.

If nothing else, this new safest Missouri cities ranking proves that you can sometimes really find a diamond in the rough.
