This is one of those internet ranking things where I'd really like to know why. Missouri has just been ranked as one of the worst states in America when it comes to life expectancy. Let's see if we can figure out why the Grim Reaper seems to love the Show Me State.

This dire new study was just shared by Life Extension (an ironic website name considering the topic). Their "Top US States With Longest Life Expectancy" places Missouri at #42 in America for long life span (or lack thereof). The map they included with the study explains a few of Missouri's problems.

As you can see from the graphic, the methodology includes stress levels, exercise, sleep quality, healthy diet and weight, park proximity, outdoor recreational spending and social isolation. 3 of these metrics stick out to me where Missouri scores low. In the Show Me State, 1 in 3 Missourians feel unhealthy amounts of stress, are overweight and feel isolated socially.

The average lifespan of a Missourian is just over 75 years. By comparison, the healthiest state in the survey is Hawaii where residents live over 80 years. I find it interesting that Vermont ranks #1 for healthy lifestyle. Apparently maple syrup is the new health food rage? I'm just guessing.

It seems that Missouri also got dinged big time for lack of spending on outdoor facilities and activities. I could argue that we find more free and less expensive things to do outside like fishing, but that's probably not what the study was getting at.

The study is an interesting read if you'd like to explore why Missouri is one of the favorite places for the Grim Reaper...apparently.
