For many, this would be considered a worst-case scenario. Fears are really growing that coffee prices will continue to spike and the reason is the belief that a coffee shortage is imminent for Missouri and Illinois.

I love coffee, but I can't handle it anymore. Still, I love the idea of a refreshing cup and immediately knew that trouble was brewing (coffee pun intended) when I saw an article by Barron's mentioning that coffee prices were at their highest since 1977. It's the reason why that will send a chill down your spine if you feel you can't face the day without your coffee habit.

Why could coffee be hard to come by in Missouri and Illinois at some point?

Here's what's going on. The prices of coffee are spiking due to a fear that there will be a shortage and the reason is a record-breaking drought in Brazil. The Brazilian Report says it's the longest drought in the country's history. Since they are the source of Arabica coffee, there is the reason for the shortage fears.

There is a potential light at the end of the tunnel is I haven't seen any evidence of that price increase being passed on to Missouri and Illinois stores - yet. You would think that your favorite coffee place would have bumped up prices a bit if this was a real threat.

Let's hope the problems in Brazil with their drought don't trickle down (coffee pun again - sorry, not sorry) to the java lovers in Missouri and Illinois.
