Comfort Food in Missouri? It’s Not Actually Food
I have a bone to pick (pun intended) with a new study that claims it knows what Missouri's favorite comfort food is. They say that the Show Me State's choice isn't really a food at all.
I think I could qualify as a food expert by almost anyone's definition. I don't know many things, but I do know and live food. That's why I was a bit disturbed at what Reader's Digest came up with for the best comfort food for Missouri.
Here's the $64,000 question - do you consider Kansas City barbeque sauce a food?
Please allow me to put my food expert hat on. I completely embrace the concept that Missouri loves (some would say we've perfected) barbeque sauce. But, it's WHAT we put the BBQ sauce on that should be the "comfort food". I am comforted when my chicken, beef or pork has BBQ sauce on it, but I have never just grabbed a spoon and gorged myself on just the sauce. I won't say the thought hasn't crossed my mind, though. I would argue that no sauce is a complete food group. Do you eat Alfredo sauce with no noodles? That's just crazy talk. So, I say 'c'mon Reader's Digest' and get with the program. Where's the beef?
