Missouri’s Lone Elk Park Just Welcomed 2 New Baby Bison
Bison are the one animal you don't normally think of when you think of Missouri, but they are a very important part of the state and the one park where they're found just welcomed two new baby bison.
St. Louis County Parks and Recreation just announced on their Facebook page today that there were two new additions to the bison herd that calls Lone Elk Park home.
How many bison are there in Lone Elk Park?
Lone Elk Park is a 546 acre park in the St. Louis area that has almost a dozen bison according to the last count I could find on their website.
How do you get to Lone Elk Park and when can you enter it?
The park is located at 1 Lone Elk Park Rd in St. Louis and is open from 8am until sunset every day. It is a drive-through park that has no admission charge, but there are special access permits you can get from St. Louis Parks and Rec.
The National Park Service says that the mortality rate of bison in the wild is around 25%. The babies just born in Lone Elk Park should be in good shape as that herd has good care. Let's hope these two young bison have a long and healthy life.
