Congratulations, Missouri. You now have the hardest to pronounce city in America. Those who do not call the Show Me State home are baffled about how to say it as they swear it's 5 letters of absolute confusion. If we're being honest, most of us Missourians have said it wrong, too.

As the calendar has turned to yet another year, the very distinguished folks at Reader's Digest have once again declared the most difficult-to-pronounce cities in America. Look who's sitting at the top of the list. It's a tiny community in southeast Missouri which only has a population of around 460 according to the last time a census worker went door-to-door here.

Qulin, Missouri is pronounced KEW-lin.

I really shouldn't be the one to criticize someone else's spelling or speaking, but every time I've dealt with a Q word, the "u" is almost always followed by another vowel. Vanna, could I buy an "a", "e" or "i"?

Even Wikipedia mentions the Reader's Digest hardest-to-pronounce honor.

How and why did Qulin, Missouri get its name?

The truth is no one knows or is willing to admit it. It just...is and that's really such a perfect Missouri thing. I would like to think this tiny southeastern Missouri place just popped up out of nowhere to mess with the minds of the rest of America. For that I say "SALUTE".
