FBI Warns Missouri Tornado Victims of Disaster Scam Happening Now
One of the lowest lifeforms on Earth might be those who prey on the victims of natural disasters. That's apparently happening in Missouri right now as the FBI in St. Louis is warning of a new disaster fraud scam with the target being recent tornado victims.
It's no secret that Missouri has been hit hard by tornadoes this Spring already with 7 reported dead in the most recent storms that impacted the St. Louis area. The FBI in St. Louis just issued this warning on their Facebook/Meta page about schemes that try to further harm tornado victims.
What scams have been reported in Missouri after the Spring tornadoes?
There are two main types of scams that are happening now:
- Home repair fraud
- Insurance fraud
The FBI in St. Louis warns that you should be suspicious of anyone that tries to hurry you into a home repair. Anyone that knocks on your door unsolicited could be a scammer. They also say to never pay for repairs before they are completed. Some scammers are claiming they work with or for the government. There is no such thing. FEMA never endorses or recommends any repair companies.
It's important to never hire a repair person who claims they can get a better result from insurance. That's a sign of someone who's planning to deceive you and your insurance company. You should always get any repair offers in writing and check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure the company or person is legitimate. That's not to say there aren't legit handymen that can help you, but any reputable person will be happy to put their offer/work in writing.
