When You Were a Kid, What Did You Want to Be When You Grew Up?

Remember when you were a kid, and you would dream about what you would be when you grew up? Now that you’re an adult, is your profession in line with what you wanted to become?

I would imagine that the percentage of people who pick a career during childhood and actually stick with the idea through adulthood is pretty small. You hear about people who knew from very early on that they would be a doctor, a musician, a member of the clergy, etc., and that’s exactly what happened to them, but I’m sure those cases are pretty rare. I don’t remember the statistic off the top of my head, but I once read that the number of college graduates who actually have a career in their field of study is surprisingly small.

What did you want to be when you were a child? I had a list going, which included:

  • Astronaut
  • Late Night Television Host (seriously)
  • Comic Book Artist

Although I’ve been accused of being “spacey,” I’ve never been an astronaut, morning radio is a close as I ever got to late night, and comic book artist was my field of study in college (again, seriously), so statistically I have no career future there.

What did you want to be when you were a kid? Did you follow through with it?
