A few weeks ago we embarked on a hugely unscientific journey to find the absolute most beloved high school mascot in our area. For our purposes, “our area” included…literally anybody that stumbled upon the post. Anyway, more than 3,000 people joined in on the fun and cast more than 20,000 votes.

So thank you to all of the humans that voted. And thank you to all of the bots that voted as well (please do not steal my identity). Unfortunately, in the interest of being fair, I wiped out all of the duplicate votes. So my apologies if you are a human that voted “Louisiana Bulldogs” 448 times. It was an immense waste of your time. However, if you are a bot that voted “Louisiana Bulldogs” 448 times, I offer no apologies. You don’t have feelings. But again, please don’t steal my identity.

So with all of that being said, let’s get to the results…

In third place, we have our Hannibal Pirates with 17 percent of the vote. The Pittsfield Saukees barely edged out the Pirates to take our runner up spot with 18 percent of the vote.

But our winner? That would be the Quincy Blue Devils with 20 percent of unique, bot-free votes.

Not that it matters for the sake of our little survey here, but the history of the Blue Devil is somewhat unclear. According to a 2014 article in the Herald-Whig, the term “Blue Devil” was first used in the 1926 QHS yearbook, but only to describe the boys basketball team. Other sports were simply referred to as “the blue and white”. It wasn’t until the 1950s when various students assumed the role of “the Blue Devil” (with full costume) and it wouldn’t become an official pre-game ritual until 1960 under then head coach Sherrill Hanks and QHS booster Paul Cory.
