Sometimes it can be difficult for film fanatics - especially those that don't live in a giant city - to find much more than Hollywood blockbusters from local theaters. Sure there's Netflix, video stores, and some nice online options for home viewing, but what about the experience of seeing a great film with an audience?

The Quincy Public Library has an answer to this dilemma.

According to Ruth Cuthbertson, from the marketing and events department at QPL, the library hosts free, weekly film screenings, "Every Monday, Quincy Public Library offers movies that are not generally shown in theaters. QPL features Foreign films, Indie films, Oldies but Goodies and Blockbusters."

Cuthbertson explained that the films chosen for the library's Monday screenings are those that are known for their artistic value, "We strive to offer films of outstanding merit; they have either received awards or have enjoyed broad public acclaim. QPL staff read movie reviews and movie awards to select the films that are shown."

QPL purchases a copy of each film featured in their Monday night screenings, and after they are shown they are added to the library's collection, which makes them available for checkout. "In order to check out any material from QPL, patrons must have a Library card. But a Library card is not required in order to attend the movies or other programs."

Films are shown every Monday at 1 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. Not only is admission free, but popcorn and soda are also provided free for attendees. The monthly film series schedule at QPL loosely follows this format:

  • 1st Monday - Foreign Film Flicks Series
  • 2nd Monday - Indie Films
  • 3rd Monday - Blockbuster Movies
  • 4th Monday - Oldies But Goodies

The format may change during special promotions, such as the Big Read in the fall.
