October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month across the nation, but locally, many groups and organizations are planning events to raise awareness, raise funds, and to honor breast cancer patients and survivors.

On October 17 (National Mammogram Day) the Blessing Health Center is sponsoring a Mammogram Sp Day. Complimentary spa services and refreshments will be provided before or after mammogram appointments. To make an appointment, call 217-223-8400 ext. 4300.

The Kroc Center will be holding a Big Pink Volleyball Tournament on October 18, with all proceeds benefiting the Blessing Foundation. Teams must be registered by October 15. The minimum donation is $10 per person. Teams must have at least four players.

Saturday, October 25 the 8th annual Pink. Pass it on in the District 5K Walk will take place beginning at Washington Park. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and guest speakers will give a presentation beginning at 9:30. The walk starts at 10. Proceeds benefit the Blessing Breast Center Financial Assistance Program. A minimum donation of $25 is required to participate, there is no cost for kids 12 and under.

Peters Heating and Air continues to operate their Pink Van, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Blessing Cancer Center. “We are very pleased to use on of our service vehicles to draw attention to this worth cause,” said Dominic Peters during the ribbon cutting for the Pink Van. “Whenever someone sees our pink van, we hope they’ll be reminded about the serious issue of breast cancer.”
