Scam Targeting Hannibal Utility Customers

Reports have surfaced regarding a potential scam targeting customers of the Hannibal Board of Public Works. 

Several media sources are reporting the scam involves calls from an 866 number claiming to be affiliated with the Hannibal BPW. The caller attempts to intimidate customers by threatening immediate disconnection unless a credit card number is provided.

People who receive a call about utility payments should not give out any information.  Instead, hang up and call the Hannibal Board of Public Works at 573-221-8050 (or 221-0955 nights and weekends) to verify. The BPW does not disconnect service until bills are 31 days delinquent, and disconnections normally do not occur on weekends.
