(QUINCY)—Adams County Sheriff’s deputies warn of a telephone scam.

Deputies say the  scam involves a phone call purportedly from a relative who has been involved in an accident or arrested. The scammer often calls an elderly victim and claims to be a grandchild. The victim is asked to wire money. Authorities advise you not to send money without checking with other family members or the sheriff’s office.

Another scam involves a call advising that you have won money or another prize and that you need to wire money to cover taxes and bogus fees.

If you have questions about the legitimacy of a call, contact the nearest law enforcement agency.
