The holidays are just around the corner, and most people will do most of their shopping online. However, there is a new Illinois Tax Law that went into effect on October 1, 2018 that you might need to know about when shopping online.

When ordering online from now on, Illinois residents will likely see a 6.25% increase in taxes of the items ordered. If you order a few things you might not see a giant increase, but if your order totals over one hundred dollars, you could see a significant change in price when you check out.

So why the change? Illinois will be using the extra money to fix roads, bridges, but not use it for paying off debt that the state owes, according to illinoispolicy.org.

So when ordering anything online in Illinois, it might be cheaper to just go to the store (if you can) and get the item you need. Yes, online shopping can be more convenient, but for Illinois residents, it might cost a few more dollars to have things shipped right to your door.
