Keith Urban headlined at the Country Jam music festival in Colorado Friday night (June 19), and he took some time to share memories of his dad for Father's Day.

"He gave me a lot of great advice growing up," Urban tells ToC's Billy Dukes. "So much of it, I sort of discarded over the years, and now I find myself listening to it very differently, and it was pretty sage advice."

The country superstar says his father passed on some of his own traits to him. "I think a very strong work ethic. My dad was always a good, solid worker," he observes. "And I like working. And just strong sense of family."

Of course, that's not all he passed down to his famous son. Urban says he's inherited some of his father's mannerisms, too. "I wrote a song one time called 'Song for Dad,' and there's a line in it that says, 'I jingle the keys when it's time to go.' I have some of the  — I tap on the table, and I have mannerisms that are like his. He's a drummer, so it's more of a rhythmic thing."

Elsewhere in the interview, Urban talked a little bit about his upcoming album, which is "a work in progress." His current single, "John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16" is the lead single from that project, and though few details are available at the moment, he did say it's likely he'll continue pushing his sound forward the way he did with his last studio effort, Fuse.

"I just think of it in terms of authenticity," he says. "Just capturing where I'm at. That's all my records have ever been about, just capturing where I am."
