They haven’t played in almost 30 years, but that will all end tonight as the Hannibal Pirates host the Quincy Blue Devils in high school football action.

Why they haven’t played in so long has to do with “scheduling difficulties” over the years. Put that all aside and this should be one heck of a game even in the rain.

It was a Hannibal-Quincy game that I broadcast years ago when I witnessed one of the hardest hits ever put on a player when the Blue Devils linebacker Doug Wentura drilled all-state running back Brad Griffey. Both were outstanding football players and there will be plenty of outstanding players on the field tonight.  I remember that play and it was almost 30 years ago when it happened.

Regardless of who wins, this is a game that needs to be played every year.  For the Pirates, they are going for back-to-back wins against Quincy schools, having beaten Quincy Notre Dame in Quincy last Friday.  For the Blue Devils, its a chance to move to 2 and 0 on the season and bring bragging rights back to the Land of Lincoln.

Is it Quincy vs. Hannibal or is it Illinois vs. Missouri? It matters not, its a chance to see a good football game.

If you can’t make it to the game, our sister station, KHMO, will provide live play-by-play online.
