It's been cold, really cold! Wind chill values have not only been below zero, but double digits below zero. I suppose it could be worse. We could be buried under several feet of snow, like the northeast. Even so, I'm sure that I'm not alone when I say that I'm ready for winter to be over! What are some of the things you're looking forward to doing once temperatures finally warm up? Here are a few upcoming events that sound like fun.

  • St. Patrick's Parade and Kelly's Fun Run

The St. Patrick's events in Quincy are actually kind of iffy in the "warm" category. Sometimes it's really nice, sometimes it's really cold at St. Patrick's Day! We'll keep our fingers crossed for 2015. The St. Patrick's Parade in Quincy will be on March 14, and the Kelly's Fun Run will be on March 15. You can register for both the St. Patrick's Parade and the Kelly's Fun Run online. The parade is free to enter, all that is required is that participants include green in their floats or attire. The cost for the run is $20. Proceeds benefit the YWCA.

  • The Great Outdoors Show

A new event is having its debut at the end of March. The Great Outdoors Show will take place March 28 - 29 at the Oakley Lindsay Center. The show will feature vendors for everything imaginable related to the great outdoors: hunting, fishing, lawn and garden, outdoor sports and adventures, the list goes on and on. One of the highlights will be weekend performances by the DockDogs canine aquatics competition. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is also bringing its Wildlife Education Trailer to the Great Outdoors Show.

  • Quincy Gems and Hannibal Cavemen Baseball

The Quincy Gems' home opener will be on Thursday, May 28 at Q.U. Stadium. The Hannibal Cavemen will be home against Terre Haute on May 30. Of course, the very best games of the summer are when the Gems and Cavemen play each other. That will happen 10 times in the 2015 season. June 4 - 5, June 18, July 10, and August 6 the teams will meet in Quincy. On June 19, July 21 - 22, August 1, and August 5 the Gems will visit Clemens Field to take on the Cavemen.

  • National Tom Sawyer Days

There's nothing quite like the Fourth of July in America's Hometown. National Tom Sawyer Days will be July 2, 3 and 4. Fence painting, frog jumping, crafts, a parade, carnival, fireworks and live music are all being planned for this annual celebration. The naming of the official Tom and Becky ambassadors is also an important component of National Tom Sawyer Days, as is the Hannibal Cannibal, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2015.

  • Big River Steampunk Festival

It's probably safe to say that the Big River Steampunk Festival was a bit of a surprise success in its inaugural year. A lot of us didn't even know what Steampunk was before last year, but the streets of downtown Hannibal were packed on Labor Day Weekend to see what this new festival was all about! Organizers are expanding the Big River Steampunk Festival for its second year. In 2015, the festival will run the entirety of the holiday weekend, September 4 - 7. They are looking at expanding the midway with more vendors and more entertainment. There will also be a parade and a "weird science fair."
