It's the most wonderful time of the year! At least, it is for fans of horror movies and horror TV shows. Even people that aren't huge fans of the genre seem to enjoy a good scary movie while passing out candy to trick-or-treaters on Halloween night. I recently published my Netflix recommendations for October (and a list of movies to avoid at all costs). Today, I searched Hulu to find horror/thriller TV shows that anyone can watch for free online. Here are my Top 5.

    Dark Shadows: The Revival

I was a kid when the revival of Dark Shadows came on TV, and I really enjoyed it. In fact, I'm still a little angry, twenty-some years later, that the series was cancelled after one season and there was no resolution to the last episode's cliffhanger. I re-watched the entire season a few years ago, and still enjoyed it. Is it a perfect show? No, but I've seen a lot worse when it comes to vampires. The original Dark Shadows from the 60s is also available on Hulu.

    The Following

The Following is a show that started out great! The first episode was tremendous. Unfortunately, the following (get it?) episodes weren't as great, and the second season was nowhere near as good as the first. Even so, I haven't given up on The Following. I'm looking forward to the next season when it returns to Fox.

    Masters of Horror

Masters of Horror is technically a TV series, but it's really more of a series of short movies. The premise of the show was to recruit "masters of horror" - great filmmakers in the genre - to create an hour-long film. I believe they were all standalone stories; I don't think any of them were ever related to each other. Directors like John Carpenter, Joe Dante, Guillermo Del Toro, Tobe Hooper and John Landis were just a few of the horror masters that contributed to the series.

    Elvira's Movie Macabre

It's hard not to like Elvira. The Mistress of the Dark has been entertaining fans for decades, and she's still just active, even into her 60s. Hulu has several Elvira's Movie Macabre episodes to choose from, including such classics as 'Santa Claus Conquers the Martians,' 'Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter' and 'Count Dracula's Great Love.' Honestly, if you're looking for something fun to watch on Halloween night, Elvira would be a good choice.

    Hannibal

Hannibal is probably my favorite show on TV. I know it doesn't always make a lot of sense, but I like it anyway. Hannibal Lecter is such a great character that I can overlook some of the show's flaws. Hannibal has a very distinct style. I'm not sure I've ever seen a TV series quite like it.
