Traffic on the Mark Twain Memorial Bridge was shut down on Monday afternoon due to a fire on the bridge.

A tanker truck fire late Monday afternoon stopped traffic in both directions on I-72 just east of Hannibal. Illinois State Police say the truck was headed eastbound into Illinois when the fire broke out. The driver was not injured.

The fire in the tractor generated a large amount of smoke visible from several miles away. The semi was hauling hydrogen peroxide. Fire crews kept the fire from spreading to the tanker trailer. The fire closed traffic shortly after 4 p.m. One lane of traffic was re-opened by 5:45 p.m. with all lanes re-opened by 8 p.m.

Traffic was diverted at US 61/36 in Hannibal while the bridge was closed.
