It had been months since I experienced them, but here they were...the Hiccups.  I had them for several minutes and they finally went away. Everytime I get them, which isn't that often, I wonder if there is a remedy to get rid of them.

So I looked up "Remedies for Hiccups" and received the following information. Hiccups are little more than a reflex, like the way your knee jerks when a doctor taps it with a hammer. They result when the Vagus nerve, which runs from the brain to the abdomen, is irritated. And the Vagus lets you know by tweaking the Phrenic nerve, which leads to the Diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs that helps you breathe. The Diaphragm then spasms, causing the "hic" sound true to the condition's name.

Experts say hiccups are usually more a nuisance than anything else. The home remedies used to stop a hiccupping bout are believed to work on two principles. One is to over stimulate the Vagus nerve. The other is to interfere with breathing, which increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood. So how do we do that?

I used to hold my breath, but that didn't seem to work. My episode lasted only a few minutes but in my research I found that the all time record for Hiccups was recorded back in 1922 on this date, June 13th, when Charlie Osborne hiccuped over 435 million times before stopping. He died 11 months after his hiccups stopped at the age of 98 in 1991 after 69 consecutive years of hiccupping. I'd like to know who counted all of those hiccups?

I do know one thing for sure, I will never complain about having the hiccups for a few minutes again after hearing this story. Are there any other ways that you know of to cure hiccups?  If you have a method, please pass it on.
