Country music tends to be one of the most conservative of all music genres, but that doesn't mean there aren't some controversial themes. This List takes a look at some of the country song lyrics that have sparked some of the biggest controversies over the years.

Country music isn't new to controversy; in fact, the oldest entry on this list of controversial country lyrics goes all the way back to 1952 and the very early days of country radio, when a female pioneer caused a national stir with a groundbreaking song questioning traditional gender roles.

Actually, women have stirred the pot quite a bit when it comes to controversial country songs; Tanya Tucker, Dolly Parton, the Dixie Chicks and more all appear on the list for songs that pushed the envelope, and Loretta Lynn bears the distinction of being the only country artist to make the list twice.

Male country stars stirred things up by addressing very different themes, from race relations to abortion, and a couple even due to flag-waving patriotic anthems that might seem a bit overstated to some.
