Blake Shelton’s ‘The Voice’ Contestant Performs Cover Better Than Miranda Lambert? [Watch]
Shelton's wife Miranda Lambert actually used to cover this song, and he was so blown away by McLaughlin's rendition, that he said something pretty shocking.
"Audra is absolutely amazing," the 'Boys 'Round Here' singer said after snagging her, adding, "That's one of Miranda's all-time favorite songs. She took it to a place that Miranda doesn't take it."
It was a pretty bold statement by Shelton, although, Lambert might agree that McLaughlin owned it.
In fairness, the contestant certainly was impressive. Just 21 years old, she finished out the fourth night of Blind Auditions with the only four-chair turn of the evening. Adam Levine hit his button first, but come the spectacular high note McLaughlin hit at the end, all judges were slapping their red circles.
It was a tough tug-of-war between Shelton, Levine, Shakira and Usher, but the country superstar won in the end.
"My wife introduced me to that song," Shelton told McLaughlin. As his peers joshed him for playing the wife card, he turned to them and said, "You're da-- right I'm playing the wife card. Shut up!"
"I used to watch her perform that song night and after night and ... I was holding you to Miranda's standard," eh continued.
According to Shelton's remarks, 'The Voice' contestant not only met Lambert's standard -- she passed it with flying colors.
