Nerd Christmas happened this past weekend, as costume clad genre fans descended upon San Diego to frighten the locals with their crazed demand for The Walking Dead spoilers, not knowing that THEY ARE THE WALKING DEAD! Well Greg Nicotero didn't reveal whose brains Negan smashed in, but we did get a really spiffy trailer for the next season that carefully edited around each and every potential victim, so we're no closer to finding out who it was. But there were plenty of other great things to come out of 2016's Geekapalooza, and I hit refresh on my Twitter and Facebook feeds feverishly over the weekend so as not to miss a single announcement. The big events:

MARVEL

Marvel made a lot of great announcements at this year's Comic-Con, from rounding out the cast of Black Panther, to revealing Kurt Russell's role in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (Star Lord's dad), to confirming Ghost Rider joining Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., details about Doctor Strange and Thor: Ragnarok, and releasing trailers for Legion, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders, but perhaps the biggest announcement was Academy Award winner Brie Larson officially being cast as Carol Danvers in MCU's first female lead film, Captain Marvel!

DC

DC also had an impressive showing at Comic-Con, with trailers for Arrow and The Flash, the premiere of the animated Batman film The Killing Joke, and footage from the upcoming Justice League film with more time spent with Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash, but we finally get a nice full trailer for Wonder Woman, due out next year!

SHERLOCK

I like the BBC. They put on good programs. Luther, Doctor Who, Downton Abbey, The Night Manager, and of course Sherlock. But they are notoriously slow with production. It's been two and a half years since the last series proper of Sherlock. Yeah, I know, we got the Christmas special, and that was fun. But finally, at long last, we got our first look at the fourth, and possibly final, series of Sherlock.

KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD

Speaking of things based on books and stories from Jolly Olde England, Guy Ritche has a long gestating multi-part epic series of films based on Arthurian legend planned. Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) plays the once and future king, with Jude Law, Eric Bana, Djimon Hounsou, Aiden Gillen & Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, and we got the first trailer.

ASH vs THE EVIL DEAD

The Evil Dead franchise is a long favorite of mine. I grew up on the grotesque, humorous horror devised by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell. One of the drawbacks of the mostly independently produced franchise is that different companies held the rights to the various films of the franchise. So while the show could reference events in The Evil Dead and The Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, the spectacularly bizarre 3rd film was untouchable... until now. So we'll finally get throwbacks to Ash's time fighting Medieval Deadites!

BONUS: AMERICAN GODS

Neil Gaiman's 2001 novel "American Gods" is an early, and heavy favorite, contender for best novel of the 21st century. So expectations are high for the show premiering on Starz. Based on the first trailer, it more than delivers.
